Sponging
SUPPLIES: Rough Sponge
PAINT COLORS Your Choice!
Using a sponge not only produces a unique textured effect, but is also a great way to cover a large area quickly. One coat will yield a very textured background and you can use up to 3 or 4 coats which will give you a more solid looking background. There are many different looks in between.
Using different types and shapes of sponges produce different looks. A large sponge with large pores will give you distinct texture and a small sponge with delicate pores will give you a softer texture.
It’s important to remember this is not a brush so the application is different. We don’t generally use a sweeping motion but rather a pouncing motion. But then again, there is always more than one way to do something.
1. Select a sponge that is rough around the edges.
a. Certain sponges will give a more obvious texture
2. Choose colors appropriate for your design
a. It’s always a good idea to choose colors that are within the same family such as warm colors (i.e. Yellow, orange and red) or cool colors (ie. Green, blue and purple)
3. Dip sponge into paint.
a. Off load excess paint if necessary onto a piece of paper.
4. Pounce sponge onto pottery.
a. Change hand positions for a more random texture.
Tip: To create a gradiated effect: begin with a light color and cover entire area. Select the next darkest color within same family and only apply to half of the area. Select next darkest color and apply to edge of area. Colors should overlap. This will create a smooth transition from color to color.
