Splattering is a fun way to add texture and depth to a design. It can add a dash of color or make
something look antiqued. This technique is often used by artists who faux finish. It’s often very subtle but
when you notice the splattering it seems to add a little life to a design.

The technique itself is very easy. You will need an old toothbrush and you will definitely get paint on your
fingers. It can also be very messy. Place paper under your project and wear an apron. If there are other
painters at the table, warn them to remove their pottery from the area unless they enjoy the splatter
technique too.

1. Select a paint color. You can do multiple colors but do one at a time.

2. Condition toothbrush in water and dab away excess. This will help the paint flow.

3. Create a mixture of paint with a tiny bit of water. Dip toothbrush into paint and work the paint into
bristles using your fingers.

4. Use your forefinger to flick paint onto the pottery. You can build up the texture to a fine grain all the
way to a dense grain. I suggest practicing on a piece of paper first.
